HEADLINES:  Young and promising man commits suicide after accusations of assault and harassment were leveled against him

Just like the court of law, there are three participants in this case, not just two. And before we point accusing fingers let's consider them:

THE ACCUSER:
I'm firmly against the rape and sexual harassment in every way. It's after effects cannot be overemphasized. So if a lady speaks up and says she is or has been harassed sexually one way or the other, we have to closely consider her and sympathize. This doesn't apply to fakers though(but how can we tell the difference?). The most important point here is defining what sexual harassment is. Even the littlest of things like catcalling is sexual harassment!..yes it is, if you didn't know. It shouldn't be tolerated. But is there a level to harassment? Should we push aside catcalling because rape has more after effect and rouses more attention. Honestly I can't give an answer to that. But on the path of the accuser, there should be valid evidence. This doesn't mean the accuser is lying if he or she doesn't have any substantial evidence, but if you are to speak up and openly accuse a person, I believe you should provide evidence- pictures, audio, texts-even if it's just for the sake of pacifying the people who need evidence. The trend of accusing without proof is improper, as a victim you could speak up or fight against rape and harassment, but it shouldn't be done at the expense of an individual.

THE ACCUSED:
Whether guilty or not, if you are being accused, there is a possibility you did something wrong (note: I said possibility). This doesn't Amount to being guilty though and doesn't give anyone the right to falsely accuse you. When accused, you should take responsibility, either by proving your innocence or by accepting the allegations and making amends in any way possible.
Suicide can't possibly be the answer. In fact suicide, just like a death sentence shows that a person is guilty, it's like meting out punishment to one's own self. Now, some might argue that an innocent person might have been very subdued,so much so, they are pushed to take their lives.
Mental health is a very important issue and as humans we reason in different ways, while a Christian might to prefer to pray about their sickness, a non-Christian might prefer to see a shrink. Everyone is different, now this is where the family of the accused comes in. Never neglect family even when their wrong, that's why there family after all. The solution should be to take time to reflect and strategize, find the best way to clear your name and clear the air. But it's not as easy as it sounds, we all need someone to walk the walk with us.

THE JUDGE:
No one and everyone is a judge. This is to say that though no one was appointed judge officially, we all have different opinions and try to pitch them in. You are the judge, I too, am the judge. We all want to chip in our opinions and ideas in important cases, mostly to gain attention and very rarely in sincerity. But no one made us judge, we should bear that in mind, remove your log first, then you can assist in removing the stick in the eye of another.
But if by all means you must judge or in any way act as an intermediary between the accuser and the accused, I beg that you consider the stories of both parties thoroughly, not just the victim( because they're the victim and you feel they're more disadvantaged). It could turn out really ugly like in the case of Izu madubueze and then the accusing finger just might point at you, just like the hands of a clock points, sharply, when it's 12 midnight.

  2. Hmm... This is a sad story. And your words are so true. We need to be careful our response to issues no matter the side we're on (accuser, accused or judge)

  3. If he saw this TEDx talk maybe he would still be alive, talking of how one tweet can ruin one's life.

Here is the solution he gave, when we see issues like his where he is the accused now, what we can do is to support him with positive tweets to reduce the effect. If he had got more positive tweets telling how they believe in him to come and prove himself maybe he would still be alive.

  4. Well Mide (or Olamide I should say), I do salute your thoughts as you have shared them with us. There will be a larger context to discuss the implications of the aftermath of a rape allegation, true or false. But for now, thanks for writing your thoughts out.
